Data Story

External Heater

Site team engagement alongside Utopi data saw a resident reduce their energy consumption.

Scenario.

During the 2025 heating season, a site team use The Utopi Platform to identify an external heater drawing significant electricity at a PBSA property. The space was consuming 23.4kWh per day, far higher than typical usage patterns for similar spaces on site. Without granular consumption data, this type of anomaly would go unnoticed, buried within overall building performance metrics. The Utopi Platform’s real-time monitoring flagged the issue immediately, allowing the site team to investigate and engage with the resident.

Resolution.

Once the site team identified the external heater and worked with the resident to address the issue, the impact was immediate and substantial.

Daily consumption dropped by 20.9kWh, an 89% reduction in energy use for that space. Over the 200-day heating season, this single intervention represents £1,045 in cost avoidance!

What makes this particularly significant is the resident satisfaction outcome: temperature remained unaffected, and the resident was satisfied with the change. This demonstrates that energy reduction doesn’t have to compromise comfort, it’s about identifying and eliminating waste.

Results over a 200-day heating season:

£1,045 cost avoidance

4,180kWh energy reduction

522.5kg CO2e avoided
