Sustainable Certifications: HQM.

The Home Quality Mark is a prestigious certification that assesses and recognises the sustainability and overall quality of new residential properties. It evaluates factors such as energy efficiency, environmental impact, health, and well-being aspects to ensure that homes are designed and built to high standards. For clients, achieving the Home Quality Mark certification means owning a building that is not only eco-friendly and energy-efficient but also promotes a healthy and comfortable living environment for its occupants, adding long-term value to their investment.

Linked to BREEAM, and also developed by the BRE (Building Research Establishment), the HQM was developed to benefit consumers, as well as house builders, developers and housing providers. The HQM certification scheme evaluates a properties design, construction, and sustainability, based on the expectation of a homeowner or occupier. It uses a similar methodology to BREEAM but has been adjusted to reflect the needs of new-build housing and is typically more suitable for residential homes.

SCORING

The HQM is scored based on two elements, a five star system based on the home overall quality, and a set of 3 performance indicators relating to aspects that would be most relevant to home occupants. A 1 star rating indicates that the home meets key regulatory baselines beyond minimum standards, while a 5 star rating indicates that home goes beyond regulatory standards and pushes the boundaries of home quality. The three indicators, Cost, Wellbeing, and Footprint are scored individually on a 5 point basis, with scores of 1 or 2 indicating going beyond minimum standards, and scores above 3 meaning the home meets high standards which are key to the indicator.

THE PROCESS

The HQM certification process begins with property assessment which looks at the quality and sustainability of the home, its surroundings, and construction or renovation. This is followed by implementation of recommended improvements, and then culminates in the award of the HQM certification.
