Scenario.
Our client purchased a legacy asset with elevated gas and electricity consumption. The building had a history of overheating in both winter and summer, creating wellbeing concerns for students and wider ESG performance issues. Without granular visibility into what was driving the overheating and where energy was being wasted, the operations team was managing blind.
Utopi solutions were rolled out across the site for the 2024-25 heating season to monitor and manage energy consumption while enhancing heating control. The deployment included:
- 669 Utopi Multisensors detecting Motion, Light, Noise, Humidity, Air Quality and Temperature
- 653 Smart TRVs automating temperature control
- 226 Electrical Meters
- 524 Watergate Water Meters
The installation was completed in just over two weeks, generating hourly data across 589 spaces.
Resolution.
The granular, room-level insight enabled our client to transform their asset management and performance strategies.
Environmental data from the Utopi Multisensors diagnosed overheating, measured building performance, tracked occupancy levels, and identified outliers, as can be seen in the heatmap below:
You can read more about the Impact we had with one of those outliers here!
Utopi’s Smart TRVs replaced existing TRVs, operating with enhanced benefits. Centrally configurable and remotely controlled from the Utopi Platform, they allowed maximum and minimum temperatures to be set and adjusted centrally. Used alongside the Utopi Multisensor’s motion detection capability, the TRVs provided temperature control within optimal ranges, ensuring unoccupied spaces were not overheated and no energy was wasted.
Results over a 200-day heating season:
The gas savings were significant, with:
31% reduction November 2024 to March 2025 inclusive ~ 282,949 kWh
59,000 kg of carbon saved (590,000 CO2e), equivalent to 4,218,000 km of driving in an average car
